How to Manage: Paediatric Allergy Training 1 (PAT1)

This online course will focus on the practical, clinical management of allergy in children and young people. It is the first in a series of three Paediatric Allergy Training (PAT) courses provided by the RCPCH.

What is the course about?

This online course will focus on the practical, clinical management of allergy in children and young people. It is the first in a series of three Paediatric Allergy Training (PAT) courses provided by the RCPCH.

During the course, our expert faculty will cover:

  • How to take an allergy focused history and allergy tests
  • First line management of cow’s milk allergy and the ‘Unsettled Infant’
  • Anaphylaxis and allergic rhinitis
  • Eczema care, egg allergy and complementary feeding.

 


 

Target Audience

  • PAT 1 is suitable for all professionals seeing children with allergic disease.

 


 

Learning Aims, Objectives and Outcomes:

Aim:

The PAT courses provide healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills required to effectively manage children with food allergies and their comorbid allergic conditions.

Outcome:

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Take an allergy focused clinical history to interpret specific IgE results
  • Explain core allergy problems, specific IgE tests and basic disease mechanisms
  • Demonstrate good emergency management of food allergy and common allergic conditions
  • Describe first line diagnosis and dietary management strategies for cow’s milk allergy; and list pregnancy, lactation, weaning diets for all children
  • Signpost patients to online resources and available multidisciplinary resources
  • Outline the importance of teaching and learning in a multi-disciplinary environment.

 


 

Faculty Lead

The Revd. Dr Mich LajeunesseRees

The Revd. Dr Mich Lajeunesse is a Consultant in Paediatric Allergy & Immunology at Southampton Children's Hospital, and an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Southampton. He was appointed to Southampton in 2008 and is the lead NHS consultant for the Regional Children's Allergy Service. Dr Lajeunesse is actively involved in food allergy research, allergic reactions to vaccines and immunotherapy. He is a member of the teaching faculty of the Allergy MSc course at the University of Southampton and leads the RCPCH PAT course series.
