Urge the UK Government to implement an RSV vaccination programme!
The UK Government is deciding whether to implement an RSV vaccination programme. As doctors and healthcare professionals on the frontline, we want to make clear the impact such a programme would have on relieving pressure on NHS services this winter and preventing infant and child mortality.
We need your help to do this.
Following an open tendering process, we understand the Secretary of State for Health and the Chancellor will decide whether to implement a programme and when.
We have a clear opportunity to persuade them to implement a full immunisation programme for both infants and adults and to ensure funding is available for the governments of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to introduce full immunisation programmes.
Following successful clinical trials, the JCVI met in June 2023 and agreed that a programme should be developed.
We know how powerful the collective voice of our membership can be. Read the letter below and add your signature to persuade the Health Secretary and Chancellor to help ensure an RSV vaccination programme is implemented without delay.
RCPCH will collate all signatures received and send this to the Health Secretary and Chancellor after Easter. Copies of the letter will be sent to key government stakeholders across the UK but names will be removed. Your name will not be published anywhere and will only be seen by the Health Secretary, Chancellor, and their offices. We do not issue CPD certificates for webinars or podcasts, as we are unable to verify participation.
However, you are still able to record as a CPD activity as you normally would, detailing what you have learned and how the learning will benefit your practice.

Dr Liz Whittaker is Senior Clinical Lecturer in paediatric infectious diseases and immunology. She divides her time between Imperial College London and the Department of Paediatric Infectious Diseases and Immunology, St. Marys Hospital, London where she is a Consultant.

Professor Shamez Ladhani PhD MRCPCH(UK) MSc(distinction) MBBS(hons) BSc(hons) is a paediatric infectious diseases consultant at St. George’s Hospital, a professor in paediatric infectious diseases and vaccinology at St. George’s University of London and consultant epidemiologist at UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), where he is the clinical lead for a number of national vaccine preventable infections. He completed his medical training at Guy’s and St. Thomas’s Hospitals, London, and his specialist paediatric infectious diseases training at St. George’s and Great Ormond Street Hospitals, London.

Locum Consultant in Paediatric Infectious Diseases, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust
I am a paediatric infectious diseases (PID) consultant at St Mary’s Hospital looking after children with unusual and severe infections and providing advice to referring hospitals across a large geographocal area. I have recently analysed data from the national survey of Group A streptococcal respiratory infections and complications during the 2022/23 iGAS surge. In addition to my PID training in London I have worked in Tanzania providing clinical care and conducting research on severe infections. I completed my MD(res) on optimising pneumococcal vaccination schedules in infants at St George’s, University of London.
